I’m Glad Kelly Rowland Has Come Forward With This

Kelly admits that she once wanted to be white.Photo of Im Glad Kelly Rowland Has Come Forward With This“It’s said that brown-skinned girls don’t sell magazines and that’s so sad,” the sexy songbird tells next month’s Essence.

“I remember wishing I was more fair-skinned, but Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mom, would say, ‘Don’t you know how beautiful you are?’ She made me come into my brown beauty. I didn’t get it, but now I do. I am chocolate and beautiful and loving it.”

Kelly is damn right, she is beautiful! There’s a lot more to this complicated issue, but it’s a shame that some people can’t get past mentioning the shade of one’s complexion, therefore, making skin color an issue. I’m glad she’s past all that now. You can say Kelly’s fug, but you’d be lying.

I saw her on Good Day LA a few weeks ago and the co-host (white guy named Steve) kept saying, “You are so pretty! You’re a really cute girl! I never knew. You’re a really cute girl up close!” It was hilarious, Kelly was slightly annoyed, but it was almost like he was tripping to discover that he could consider a dark-skinned woman to be gorgeous.

Either way, many people don’t have the courage to come out wit it and say they were ashamed of their ethnic features. Little black girls can look up to Kelly and think, WTF? Kelly’s gorgeous and so am I!

I am sorry but give me a break Kelly!! She is just looking to sell CD’s. Why in the 21st century is this an issue for someone like her. I hate to bring this up but it seems to me that in the last 20 + years pop culture and music have for the most part revolved around black communities. So don’t try to say that you( kelly) haven’t had a million and one reasons to be happy with the color of skin you have. This is like Kelly Clarkson saying she had an eating disorder for like 5 min. Now I can understand if she said she thought she was ugly but what she is saying is she wishes she was white. Well I am white and there are certainly lots of things about me I wish I could change and be more black, like I would love a bigger penis like most black men. Why does the issue of skin have to come up at all? There is usally some kind of agenda. As for the rebuttle someone will say that you are white you have no idea. Well I hate to say this but it is PC now to discriminate against white people. Just go into the Mexican parts of Phoenix and you will see what I am talking about. Or how about last year when I was in Hilton Head SC and I got called a Cracker while standing in line at a Convenience store for no reason at all and then the whole store started laughing( I was the only white person in there). Unfort we live in a society that people or all color hold on to this issue and make it a big deal when it benifits them or just because they are totally idiots to begin with. I have many more examples than the two I just gave and my reason for saying that is because I don’t dwell on it. Yes there are idiotic people out there and the rest of us need to stand up to them and say hey, your a fucking idiot why don’t you change that kind of thinking, no matter what color of skin they have because being prejudice agaist any skin color is wrong, no matter if you think you are on the right side!!!!

More celebrities need to share their vulnerabilities or at least what used to make them vulnerable in their “perfect world” of glamour HA!.

It’s the trials, struggles, victories and ugliness that evolve us into who we are today. It is a raw yet troubling happiness I feel with Kelly Rowland’s candidness. I am glad though that she admitted that. Sadly ,her remarks are common childhood sentiments and reflections of people of color that have similar stories to tell because of the fixation and symbolism of blatant “white privilege” and the role it has is the Americas all over the world. I love Kelly even more now! :-)

WHAT it’s LIKE to be a BLACK GIRL for those of YOU who AREN’T…

“First of all it’s being 9 years old and feeling like you’re not finished
    Like your edges are wild
    Like their’s something, everything wrong
It’s putting food coloring in your eyes to make them blue and suffering their burn in silence.
It’s plopping a bleached mop head over the kinks of your hair and primping in front of mirrors that deny your reflection…”
    – Patricia Smith (excerpt from her poem)

Or I would have retorted back to you in that post. Anyway you can not compare Kelly’s wanting to be skinny stories to wanting to be white. #1 Skinny is attainable, #2 White isn’t unless you can pay for it like Michael Jackson or overcome by a severe case of Vitiligo. :-)

There is so much depth and dirt to her simple statement. It is not just a simple let’s read a self esteem book to make me feel better.

Maybe you’re right, maybe Kelly is just trying to sell more CD’s I don’t know where her heart is to the reason she admitted that, but even so, it’s a “real issue” that too many people still tiptoe around that needs to be put out there in the open outside of Essence Magazine

As for your comments about wanting to be black and mentioning the penis size, I know you were trying to be funny, but it wasn’t. This is A “race” based stereotype that still lingers today that the black man has a big penis. You objectified Kelly’s issue of wanting white or lighter skin to wanting a bigger ding dong c’mon G! Much Love for ya, You are hilarious, but I had/have to disagree with ya :-)

I am sorry but please help me. Why do you have to put such a social stigma on being black? I don’t think one exists for the better part of the USA. I understand that there are many, many people who like to exasperate this issue. YOu don’t think that there are hardships for white people growing up? Maybe I can’t relate because I am not a black girl and I wasn’t giving her shit for saying that, all I was saying was there was an agenda and sometimes it isn’t always about your skin color. So should I dislike all black people now because a handful of them called me a Cracker, which I might add was suppose to be quite the insult. I have many, many friends who have lighter and darker skin tones than me and I don’t see them any different. Yes we all have had a different experience growing up but who you become is what matters and they don’t fixate on the color of their skin or say it gives them some kind of a handicap in our society. Actually most of friends of african decent make quite a lot of money. That is because they worked hard, went to college and bust their ass to get what they want. I have this conversation many times with it but they don’t say they felt disadvantaged because of it, they say it made them work harder!! I love you too but I guess you will never understand where I am coming from because I am white. And trust me, disproving popual belief I don’t come from an enormous house with really rich parents who gave me everything. Because believe it or not white people can live in the Ghetto too and have the same hardships you are exclusively giving to people of color!!! BIG LOVE

I think what you should say is people with Money instead of white! Because that is all that really matters, if you are rich then you are in. No matter what ethnic background you are!! Amen to that. Peace out. I am not saying you are wrong, just a little off the mark:)!!!! KISSES
