Breast Feeding Protest
Protesting social attitudes that stigmatize breast-feeding in public in Italy, more than 100 mothers gathered in Rome on Tuesday for a public mass-nursing aimed at bringing attention to the matter.
"People still give a start when they see a woman breast-feeding," Grazia Passeri, president of (Save Mothers), told the Italian news agency ANSA, "but they have to learn that a breast is not just a sexy object." Passeri's organization is currently running a campaign with the slogan, "I'll Nurse Where I Feel Like It."
One of the participants in Tuesday's mass-nursing, told ANSA that, when she breast-feeds in public: "They give me evil looks, but I do it anyway."
Many societies still feel squeamish about seeing women breast-feed in public.
I don't like seeing women breast feed and I'm a female.
But if the baby needs to be fed, feed the baby. I don't know how these women think that people will stop being weirded and grossed out by public displays of breast feeding. We're just used to those things being used for so much more than keeping a baby alive that it's a little unsettling. It's a public perception that would be very difficult to change. Additionally, I never see hot moms breast feeding, only fug ones. I think that also has something to do with the stigma. Just saying.
