Fantasia Blames Negative Press Coverage on Being Dark-Skinned
It was just last month when I blogged about Whoopi Goldberg's nonsensical defense of Mel Racist Gibson when I said: "I have discovered that the darkest-skinned black people seem to have the most issues with their race;" and in the wake of her home-wrecking scandal, Fantasia says she received negative press coverage because she has dark skin.
Last week, black website The Root posted an article claiming that Fantasia has faced harsher media coverage than Alicia Keys because of her skin tone. In a recent interview with Vibe, Fanny says that her "ethnic features" and skin tone contributed to the negative coverage she received from the mainstream media.
Fantasia said: "Yes, I do. I really feel like it does. I was on Nancy Grace, CNN, every gospel station and in every magazine and every newspaper, it was on. You would have thought I was the President or something.”
Fantasia also mentions what it was like competing on American Idol: When [I did Idol] it seemed like everybody there was Barbied out. Slim, long hair, light eyes, light-skinned. And here I come with my dark skin, full nose, short hair and full lips — it was hard.”
Fantasia also talks about not getting much red carpet coverage in popular magazines: “They never put me in those magazines [featuring] the red carpet. Everybody there has long hair and everybody is bright-skinned, and I was like, ‘But wait a minute. They never gave me that.’ That bothered me,’ “And then I tried hard to find people to dress me and they still would not put me there [in those magazines].”
How does Fantasia feel today about not making the magazines? “One day I was like, ‘that’s okay’, but I had to get to that point. I am a dark-skinned, full-lipped sister and it’s all right. Brown is in baby, and it ain’t going anywhere.”
Fantasia was "on Nancy Grace, CNN" and more because she TRIED TO KILL HERSELF. Alicia Keys did not. Alicia Keys also did not get sued for filming a sex tape with a married man. Fantasia is trying to excuse her immoral behavior by blaming press coverage on her dark skin. Second, whenever a celebrity tries to commit suicide, it's on CNN because it's called "news," bitch!
Also, yes, people who compete in any talent contest may not look the same way you do. And as far as Fanny not making the magazines for events, her career was never that hot! Some darker-skinned individuals think that the world is against them when, in reality, it's often not that deep.
For example, I've seen both Kelly Rowland and Fantasia in person before and Kelly Rowland is very dark, she's just under very bright lights most of the time that you see her. Kelly is darker than Fantasia but Kelly is beautiful and was more popular, and Fantasia was never beautiful nor as successful as Kelly. Kelly is also featured in many magazines and you never hear her whining about her skin tone, ever. Fantasia shouldn't give any more interviews, even though she has a new album.

In America racism is very real although Fantasia was being being "dog-walked" in the media especially by Nancy Grace. Not one magazine would put her on the cover like they have done in the past to others. The scandal title would be on the cover but her face was not shown. The magazines were very careful to not make her name any bigger and never included her side of the story. It is very hard to get dark-skinned women the level of success that their fairer skin peers reach. Its just a fact but you cannot hold a pity party you must fight and earn your respect.

It's not just about racism. I, myself, have interviewed AA's and they come in dressed ghetto, and smell strongly of oils, while speaking ghetto slang or in a way that no one can understand. This is a large part of why people won't hire, and it's time that AA's admit faults. I can't hire someone who "you know what I mean" or "shizam" every other word. Everybody is expected to act properly in an interview, but many blacks do not and then call it racism.

@ Mishie, I'm mentioning skin tones while you're mentioning the plight of African-Americans in America.
I'm African-American. I'm well aware that racism exists and I hate the tea party motherfuckers, but that has nothing to do with Fantasia's bullshit whining. She's in victim mode.
African Americans have a very LONG way to go. However, those who've found success haven't excelled by bitching about the status quo and being afraid to change it.
Fantasia won American Idol, therefore mentioning how "hard" it was for her to compete on the show doesn't make much sense.

"Some darker-skinned individuals think that the world is against them when, in reality, it's often not that deep." Well, the stats state otherwise. Black americans have higher poverty rates, higher unemployment rates, etc. Next time one of my highly qualified friends are denied a business or mortgage loan, I'll replay your quote, maybe it will make them feel better. Unless you are one of those people who believe that racism does not exist, perhaps you should view a teaparty rally to find out the truth.

It's sad that people use their ethnicity to justify their actions. This woman has a poor track record and continues to go down a bad path. If I recall she has a daughter and her recent actions have done nothing to show she has any regard for herself as a parent. This smells of a conspiracy to make her relevant again... I'm waiting for Ruben Studdard to attempt a carjacking to get himself back in the news

Exactly! I was too through with Fantasia when I read these recent rants from her. She is just being ridiculous now. As far as press coverage about affairs, no one ever got it as bad as Angelina Jolie and Angelina is a white as it gets. Fantasia is really reaching with this one and just making excuses for the poor choices she has made.
