Lindsay Lohan hosted Saturday Night Live last week and drew mixed reviews, with some criticizing her for obviously reading from cue cards and others praising her for actually showing up. At least one former host is standing in Lindsay’s corner, as New Girl star and professional hipster Zooey Deschanel defended Lindsay in a recent interview.
“I thought she did a really good job,” Zooey said. “Everyone reads off cue cards. That’s how it’s done, because they change the script right before, so you have to read off cue cards.” Sure, everyone reads off cue cards, but not everyone squints at them and stumbles over the words like they have an 80 year-old’s eyes and a 4 year-old’s reading level.
“It’s a very hard thing to do,” added Zooey, who drew nearly universal praise for her own hosting gig earlier this season. Of course it’s a hard thing to do, which is maybe why Linds shouldn’t have chosen it for her first real acting job in three years. I understand she was trying to show the world she can still work, but I don’t think any producers will be banging down her door after that performance.
