I don’t like to think of Katy Perry lying to me (maybe lying with me…) but it seems that’s what’s happening in her explanation of her newest number one single, Part of Me.

Katy swears the song is not about her split with ex-husband Russell Brand, and was in fact written years ago, before she even met Russell. I’m calling shenanigans. Even if the song was written before the break-up, Katy had to see the significance of singing it at the Grammys and releasing it as her next single.
She even changed the lyrics so that the song would be more relevant to her current situation. A line in which she sings, “You can keep the diamond ring – it don’t mean nothing anyway,” was added for the Grammy performance. Coincidence? Yes, says Katy.
“I feel like I’m in some kind of weird ‘Truman Show’ where I’m like, ‘Why is this single appropriate now and it wouldn’t have been appropriate then?’” she said in a recent interview. “I guess the universe is kind of — we’re kind of like, dancing together in some weird way. Does that make sense or am I being to hippie?” Rule of xlarge_p, KP: whenever you have to ask if you’re being “too hippie,” the answer is yes.
