Zooey Deschanel on Female Roles: They Suck

New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel explains that there just isn’t much variety when it comes to the scripts that she’s sent. Zooey says that she rarely sees projects or characters that excite her as a “comedienne.”

“I really do feel that for a long time women didn’t have the place in comedy that they should… It’s so depressing… It felt so frustrating to always be setting up someone else’s comedic moment.”

Sounds like New Girl is the perfect role for the newly single star.

“’Bridesmaids’ success meant that a lot of networks realized people were interested in that kind of comedy. We already had our show in production, but it made the networks pay more attention.”

Is this true? Maybe I haven’t noticed. I think Roseanne, Tina Fey and so many ensemble casts with females are so iconic and successful, I haven’t noticed a shortage of funny women on TV.
