Girls Recap: Party Drama

At this point in the first season of Girls, we’ve seen Lena Dunham’s character do pretty much everything associated with single urban 20-somethings. She’s struggled, had sex (a lot) and made every conceivable kind of mistake, but until this week’s episode, we never really saw her attempt to enjoy herself. Hannah doesn’t have the money or disposition for the NYC club scene, but when invited to a massive warehouse party (attended by “all of Brooklyn and two-thirds of Manhattan”) she jumps on board and seems optimistic about her chances of having a good time. Of course, the audience knows better.

Girls In Bushwick

Shoshanna may be the only Brooklynite more awkward than Hannah and she also showed up to the warehouse banger with full expectations of a great night (and possibly even the loss of her virginity), but this is Girls we’re talking about, so instead of fun, she was met with a new low. More on that later. Allison Williams’ Marnie is typically capable of rising above the fumbling awkwardness of her friends, but tonight’s episode dealt her the low blow of seeing her ex of two weeks intimately involved with a new girl.

Hannah, meanwhile, sees Adam outside of his apartment for the first time (“I’ve never even seen him with a shirt on.”) but runs in fear instead of confronting him. It’s a night of unexpected misfortune for everyone, but as usual, no one has it as hard as Shoshanna. Zosia Mamet showcases her comedic acting chops when her character accidentally smokes crack (from a “glass cigarette”). Left unattended for a matter of seconds, Shoshanna bolts and spends the rest of the evening sprinting around Bushwick…pantsless.

Allison Williams: Marnie on Girls

Hannah spends some time speaking with a woman named Tako (pronounced “taco”) and finds out how little she actually knows about Adam. Jessa spends the evening with her married, middle-aged employer who ends up getting his @ss kicked as a result of Jessa’s wild behavior. But dude’s not the only one who ends the night a little banged-up. In fact, Bushwick pretty much kicks the crap out of everyone…

Marnie gets slapped by Hannah’s gay ex-boyfriend, Hannah falls off Adam’s bike during a disastrous mission for scrap metal and Shoshanna beats the crap out of Ray before giving him a “non-sexual groin massage.” Amazingly, the episode actually ends on an up note for Hannah (perhaps her first of the series) as Adam consents to being her boyfriend. Of course, Hannah realized her selfishness but did nothing to change it, and she’ll likely screw up this new relationship within a matter of days, but hey…it’s something.
