Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth may be among the youngest celebrity couples to ever put a ring on it, but Liam still put a lot of thought into his proposal and went the traditional route every step of the way.

In addition to asking Miley’s parents permission to propose (Billy Ray said yes despite the boy’s startling lack of mullet), Liam worked closely with jeweler Neil Lane to design a ring that’s as unique as Miley herself, or some crap like that.
Liam chose a 3.5 carat cushion-cut antique diamond from the late 1800s. “At that time no two diamonds were alike, as they were all hand-cut,” Lane explains. “So it’s fascinating to look at because it hasn’t been re-cut to look contemporary over the years. I find that really romantic.” The setting and smaller diamonds were also chosen by Liam so that “the light flashes and sparkles no matter where Miley moves her hand.”
