Miley Cyrus might struggle with her image as a washed-up child star with redneck tendencies, but she’s also earned a good deal of respect (and generated a bit of controversy) for her outspoken stance on gay rights and marriage equality.

Miley made her feelings clear on Twitter this week, tweeting the above photo of herself wearing a button that reads, “Homophobia is a social disease.” This isn’t the first time that Miley has spoken out against anti-gay prejudice. She sports an equality tattoo on her hand and even wrote an essay about marriage rights for Glamour magazine.

That’s right  – Miley not only spends time contemplating serious social issues, she also knows how to read and write. Naturally, some conservative groups have taken issue with the views of the former Hannah Montana, but we say if Miley’s gonna stir up controversy, better to do it for her political views than for her alarming weight loss.
