We were in the lead. Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Nathan Adrian of Team USA were off to a strong start in the 4×100 freestyle relay yesterday. In 2008 we won the gold medal, shocking the French. In 2012, the French shocked us, cutting into our .3 seconds lead to win the gold medal. Team USA picked up a silver.
Sexy Ryan Lochte anchored the team. He isn't known for being a sprinter and Team USA coach Gregg Troy's move seemed questionable. Lochte swam the slowest leg of the race and fell behind in the final 25 meters.
The French avenged their stunning Beijing loss.
Meanwhile Michael Phelps was on his A-game. Unlike his 400 individual medley race, Phelps was looking just as fast as he did in the last Olympics and very ready to win some more gold medals.
Yahoo Sports reports: "Team USA had won every 4×100 relay ever swum at the Olympics until getting out touched by Ian Thorpe and the Australians in 2000. The thrilling comeback win in Beijing has been their only Olympic title since then."
