Katie Couric’s rapid descent from serious journalist to busy-body tabloid queen continued today with London’s Daily Mail publishing comments made by the once-respected newswoman in which she attacks Kate Middleton for – of all things – her weight.
“I think she’s getting too thin,” Katie reportedly remarked while filming the first episode of her new talk show. The criticism may have been an impromptu, off-hand remark, but it’s likely to enrage the Royal Family, who recently granted Couric unprecedented access to their personal lives for an upcoming ABC News special.
Kate’s weight has been an issue in the past and it’s an especially sensitive topic for the folks at Buckingham Palace as the memories of Princess Di’s struggle with bulimia (as well as her accusations that the the Queen Mum couldn’t have cared less about her issues with food) are still fresh in the minds of many Britons.
The Mail also implied that Couric suggested she may not have the Duchess as a guest on her show unless she packs on some pounds, but no quotes to that effect have been released.
