The Oscar-winning actress spent a few moments at the caskets of her brother and nephew, and gently touched the body of her mother before leaning down to kiss her, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Toward the end of the service, American Idol season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino sang a rousing rendition of the gospel classic “Your Grace and Mercy,” grasping Hudson’s hand.
As mourners including Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah and music producer Clive Davis left Chicago’s Apostolic Church of God, Jennifer, 27, joined in the chorus of the recessional, “I Go to the Rock,” a longtime family friend told PEOPLE.
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley attended the service. After the funeral, a horse-drawn carriage led the procession to the cemetery.
I am not saying Julia is or is not responsible for the death of her mother, brother and 7 year-old son, but I found this comment that I read on another site interesting, insightful even.
Has it occurred to anyone that Julia and William planned the abduction of Julian to extort money from her sister and the plan went bad.
William may have have married Julia with the expectation that they would later get a big pay out from from Jennifer and two years later, when they are living in the same situation (wage garnishments, living with mom, no new stuff, no car…but your sister is a movie star)he convinced her of his master plan to help them get on…or vice versa.
She had to be resentful about driving a school bus and having no money when her sister is obviously not struggling. and how convenient is it that he knows her schedule and all of this went down while she was “at work”… but there was no school friday…she was the one to discover the bodies…but her brother is the person who normally picks her up…but he’s dead…how did she get home…
and why is she all at the house trying to get the mail after her whole family just got killed in there, she wasn’t paying her bills before why is she acting concerned about them now. If my baby and my mama were murdered IM SORRY BUT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE, COMPLETE A SENTENCE VERBALLY, LET ALONE, TYPE SOME SHIT ON MYSPACE.Very Very suspicious.
Something that’s unmentioned in this biased comment posted above is that neighbors reported that William vowed to “mess up” the Hudson family shortly before the murders when he got in an argument with them.
For now these murders look like a violent act of revenge not a master plan gone wrong. However, I heard Julia doesn’t seem sincere when she begged for her son’s return, I think it’s EFFING weird that she blogged about Julian a day after he was found dead, and bitch still has William as a top friend on MySpace. All that makes her look suspect.
Either Julia had an active role in the murders, or she has all kinds of sick, twisted issues.
Julian King was just so cute! You could tell that kid had lots of personality.
A private memorial service will be held early next week for the mother, brother and nephew of Jennifer Hudson, who were shot to death in Chicago.
The Hudson Funeral Home announced the service will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Apostolic Church of God, according to the Chicago Tribune.
On Friday, a rep from the funeral home will announce if the family will hold a public service, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions to a newly created Hudson-King Domestic Violence Protection Fund, care of Seaway Bank
and Trust, P.O. Box 19522, Chicago, IL, 60619.
William Balfour, the ex-husband of Hudson’s sister, Julia, is being held as a “person of interest” in the case. Chicago Police say the murders are “domestic-related.”
If you feel like your life sucks right now, just be thankful you’re not Jennifer Hudson.
Actress/singer Jennifer Hudson may be worried about her own safety. “Extra” received chilling new details on how Hudson in hiding and surrounding herself with security guards.
“I can’t disclose where Jennifer is staying — I can just tell you it’s a hotel. She has bodyguards… and the hotel she’s staying at has a great security team.”
According to recent reports, it’s believed that William had an accomplice at least drive him to his girlfriend’s house after the murders. Jennifer is probably fearful of not just William’s alleged accomplice, but anyone connected to that a-hole. I want the police to find the killers and get this whole mess wrapped up immediately. It’s pissing me off. I blame Jennifer’s sister Julia. There, I said it. That bitch is an irresponsible sister from hell!

Morbidly obese Julia Hudson took to her MySpace to update her “about me” section. It previously described her loving family before the tragic events.
“When I started my MySpace all of the above was true, now because I chose to do what was natural to me and love someone, it cost me my beautiful family.
“It cost me my beautiful, loving, supporting mother Darnell, my true blue baby brother Jason - I love you baby – and last but not never least, my only son Julian, my innocent baby… [Julian's] soul is at ease. I take comfort in knowing that Julian is with my mother and my brother and most of all the Lord, and now he’s my angel, he’s protecting me.”
Of course Julia wants to believe that she’s innocent, but she’s not. She allowed a convicted felon who served 7 years on an attempted murder charge into the home she shared with her mother and son! If she wants to be a ghetto hood rat, fine, but she should not have brought that shit home to her family.
Everyday she will regret these murders and probably marrying such a loser. Men usually don’t kill their estranged wife’s family over car payments, but I hope the Hudson tragedy makes other women realize sometimes it’s better to be alone than to be with trash just so that you can say you have a man. Not worth it.
I hope I don’t sound too harsh or insensitive. This will always be a tragedy and Julia is not to blame but she is a factor.

The 27-year-old parolee had been thrown out of the Hudson home before, and Julia says he’d threatened to harm the family, and kill Julia if she ever had any other boyfriends.
Balfour is being held at Stateville Correctional Center for violating his parole. One of his girlfriends contradicted his alibi and told cops he was involved in the slayings on Friday.
Police are also looking into the possibility that Balfour involved someone else in the crime.
Police have identified the body of a young boy discovered in an SUV in Chicago as Jennifer Hudson’s missing nephew Julian King, police Supt. Jody Weis said Monday.
The body was discovered “in the rear seat” of a white Chevrolet Suburban on Chicago’s West Side Monday morning, according to the Chicago Police Department. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to reports.
Immediately following the news of the body’s discovery, Hudson’s family members organized a church vigil. Several family members visited the medical examiner’s office Monday afternoon.
King, 7, went missing Friday after an unidentified assailant fatally shot Hudson’s mother Darnell and brother Jason. Over the weekend, Hudson offered $100,000 for the safe return of her nephew.
The Chicago Tribune reports that bullet casings were found in the boy’s room on Friday.
I am very interested to find out what happens to the person(s) who committed these crimes. This is all just so sad and senseless, makes ya wanna hug your family a lil tighter and tell them how much you care. Sending positive vibes the Hudsons’ way.
Look who has humility and a heart? New York did not have to apologize to Jennifer Hudson and wish her well, but she did. I told ya New York is actually sweet. This was a very classy thing for her to do and I’m sure JHud appreciates it.
