Bio
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States and the first African-American President of the United States. How rockstar is that?
His father was born in Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. The two met at the University of Honolulu. Barack's parents separated when Barack was two and they divorced when he was four.
His father eventually returned to Kenya while his mother held down the fort. She later married another foreign student, Lolo Soetoro, who was from Indonesia. She liked the foreigners.
In 1967, Barack moved to Jakarta where he lived from age six to 10. At the age of 10, he returned to Honolulu where he lived with his grandparents. Barack was partially raised by his grandmother whom he adored.
After becoming a 1979 high school grad, Barack moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College. He studied there for two years and then transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in Political Science and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983.
After graduation, Barack worked in New York at Business International Corporation and New York Public Interest Research Group before returning to Chicago, where he became a community organizer with a church-based group which worked to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods.
Sadly, Barack Obama's father died in a 1982 car accident.
The future president entered Harvard Law School in 1988, where he was elected the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review in its 104-year history. He went on to receive his J.D. degree from Harvard in 1991 with magna cum laude honors.
He then returned to Chicago, directed a voter registration drive, and soon became a civil rights attorney and a lecturer on constitutional law;. In 1992, Barack married Michelle. That same year his mother lost her battle to cancer.
In 1995, Barack's first book, Dreams from My Father, was released and went on to be a New York Times bestseller.
His political career began with a 1996 election to the Illinois Senate where he served from 1997 to 2004. In 2000, he unsuccessfully campaigned for a seat in the House of Representatives. Who knew he would later go on to become the most powerful man in the world?
