Danny Gokey is an American Idol eighth season finalist whose wife died within months of his American Idol audition. Danny used his story as "inspiration" aka the sympathy vote and it has gotten him pretty far.
The soulful singer began singing Christian music but wanted to go mainstream.
Gokey's wife Sophia died during routine surgery for congenital heart disease. He started a foundation in her name with some of her family members. The foundation includes a program to provide donated musical instruments to students.
